Hydration Heroes: Skin Looks Healthier and Younger

The key to keeping your skin looking younger and healthier is keeping your skin’s moisture levels topped up. Hydrated skin is happy skin, and here are the ingredients and products to know to keep it that way.

Hydration heroes: the best ingredients to hydrate our skin

Hyaluronic acid

You may have already heard of hyaluronic acid’s hydrating benefits. This powerhouse ingredient forms part of your skin’s framework and is responsible for its plump and hydrated appearance. It functions as a humectant – a substance that helps the skin hold onto water to stay hydrated – and can bind to up to 1,000 times its weight in water.

It’s produced naturally by our bodies, but ageing and exposure to external threats like UV radiation from the sun and pollution can cause levels to deplete. Fortunately, it’s available in topical products such as serums, so you can top up your supplies and give parched skin a healthy dose of moisture.

When your skin is hydrated, your skin may appear smoother and fine lines and wrinkles can be softened. Hyaluronic acid serums can therefore be effective in reducing signs of premature ageing. Hydrated skin also appears more radiant and can help your makeup glide on more easily.

Glycerin

Turn over your moisturisers and you’ll probably see glycerin among the ingredients. It’s one of the most commonly used ingredients in skincare. It’s a natural softener that’s derived from vegetable oils or animal fats and a humectant, which attracts moisture from the air into the top layer of your skin (the stratum corneum). It helps to keep skin soft and supple, and prevent moisture loss.

Ceramides

Our skin barrier helps seal in the good stuff our skin needs to stay healthy (moisture) and keeps out harmful elements such as pollution and UV rays. Ceramides are the glue that holds our skin cells together, the mortar in our brick wall if you like, that keeps our skin barrier intact and functioning properly.

Squalane

Like hyaluronic acid, a version of squalane (squalene) can be found naturally in our bodies. It is a main component in sebum, the oily substance that moisturises and protects our skin and skin barrier. And like hyaluronic acid, the amount made and retained by our bodies declines with age. Fortunately, the squalane found in skincare is as effective and safe as that we naturally produce. It is also gentle enough for all skin types, and can provide relief from skin conditions such as inflammation, eczema, acne and rosacea, which are linked to a compromised skin barrier.

FAQs

Are there any downsides to using hyaluronic acid?

As hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in our skin, it doesn’t usually encourage any side effects or allergic reactions when applied topically. It can also be used by all skin types. If you do notice an adverse reaction such as itching, swelling or redness, stop using your skincare product immediately. Doing a patch test and applying your product to your arm before using it on your face can also prevent any unwanted results.

What to look for in a hyaluronic acid serum?

You don’t need to use hyaluronic acid in large amounts. In fact, if you use too many products containing hyaluronic acid all at once, it can irritate your skin, especially if you have sensitive skin. To hydrate the surface of the skin, look for high-molecular weight hyaluronic acid serums. Low-weight, smaller molecules will penetrate the skin to a deeper level instead, whereas a product with multiple weights will work on multiple layers.

How to use hyaluronic acid serum correctly?

After cleansing your skin to remove any impurities and makeup that could prevent your serum penetrating your skin’s surface, apply your hyaluronic acid serum to damp skin, massaging into your face and neck. The simplest way to remember the correct order your skincare should be applied in is the lightest to thickest. Apply your lightweight serum on before your thicker moisturiser to allow your serum to penetrate deeper into your skin, and your moisturiser to trap in all the active ingredients and benefits.

Can I use hyaluronic acid serum every day?

As with most skincare products, consistency is key. Using a hyaluronic acid serum or moisturiser every day and sticking with it is not only safe but beneficial.

Do you need to apply moisturiser after hyaluronic acid?

As hyaluronic acid draws moisture from wherever it can to work effectively, if your skin is dry already, it will steal it from deep within your skin. Using a hyaluronic acid-rich moisturiser day and night can help to lock moisture into the skin instead. It can also help to support your skin’s overnight recovery mode and replenish overnight moisture loss.

What can you not mix with hyaluronic acid?

The great news is hyaluronic acid plays well with most things. When applying retinol, especially in the first few weeks, you may notice your skin can appear irritated, dry and flaky though. During this time, make sure to combine hyaluronic acid with a moisturiser so it can draw water to itself, and not dry out your skin further.
