Understanding and applying the right routine for dry skin can be the difference in having a dull, lacklustre look and an all-day glow. Lancôme Pro Artist Antonia Basile shares her tips and tricks on how to get a radiant finish with our best foundation for dry skin.
How to identify if you have dry skin
If you think you have dry skin, don’t despair. It’s a very common problem. It can also be improved with the help of hydrating moisturisers and daily sun protection, and concealed with a good foundation for dry skin.
To help you determine what skin type you are, see how your skin behaves after cleansing. If after 30 minutes after washing your face and patting it dry, your skin feels tight and flaky, you probably have dry or sensitive skin. If you’re still not sure, then press blotting sheets to different areas of your skin and hold the results up to the light. Dry skin will leave little or no oil visible.
What to look out for in a foundation if you have dry skin
In addition to feeling tight and uncomfortable, especially during colder months, dry skin can appear rough, flaky and dull. It can also become easily irritated and signs of ageing can appear more prominent on dry skin.
When looking for the best hydrating foundation for dry skin to conceal any unwanted wrinkles, choose a good moisturising formula packed with nourishing ingredients that help to keep your skin feeling comfortable all day long. Lightweight liquid and creamy formulas offering sheer to medium coverage also blend easier on dry skin for a smooth, even finish.
Our best dewy foundation for dry skin
Lancôme Teint Miracle foundation has a high concentration of water to help keep skin hydrated for up to 18 hours* and provide long-lasting, even coverage for 12**.
Its lightweight formula not only helps to conceal redness but doesn’t cause breakouts or further irritation. Coupled with its combination of pearlescent pigments, it helps to give dry skin a dewy and radiant finish.
Our best full coverage foundation for dry skin and a matte finish
Our bestselling liquid foundation Teint Idole Ultra Wear is enriched with Eternalsoft polymer to provide comfortable all day wear and full coverage, which doesn’t feel cakey. It’s also made with perlite and silica, two effective oilabsorbing ingredients, to encourage a matte finish and that your makeup stays put without smudging and needing to be regularly touched up.
How to apply foundation for dry skin
Apply a primer for dry skin
For a look that’s more dewy than dry, prep your skin properly before applying your makeup with nourishing skincare and a primer that’s designed to deliver hydration all day.
Step 2: Add additional moisture to the skin with gel-based Prep & Hydrate Illuminating Primer. It not only hydrates and protects the skin but ensures that the makeup will last all day.
Stick to creamy formulas
Antonia says: For dry skin, we want to choose a foundation that adds moisture back into the skin. Stick to creams and liquids and avoid dry powders.
Step 3: Use Teint Idole Ultra Wear Nude Foundation’s sheer weightless formula, which glides on to the skin effortlessly, to create a lightweight and natural base. Start by applying the foundation to the centre of the face with a brush and blending outwards. It allows you to build up the coverage as it’s needed.
Step 4: If needed, add a touch of high coverage concealer, like Teint Idole Ultra Wear Camouflage, around the eyes to brighten and for extra coverage, and dab it on with your ring finger.
Step 6: Finish your complexion by adding a pop of colour to the cheeks with Cushion Blush Subtil. This adds radiance while still adding colour. Use cream blusher instead of powder for dry skin.
Our best setting spray for dry skin
To keep your makeup looking fresher for longer or to revive it throughout the day, apply a generous spritz of Fix It Forget It Spray. It’s enriched with hyaluronic acid derivatives and kiwi fruit extract to keep your moisture levels topped up, too.
To apply, hold the spray a six to eight inches from your face and apply in an X and T-shaped motion to cover all angles.
