Master The Cut Crease in 5 Steps

There’s a new beauty trend in town and it’s giving smokey eyes some serious competition. If you’re already familiar with cut crease eyeshadow, did you know you can achieve it at home without the need to enlist the help of your favourite professional makeup artist though? Our top tip: all you need to do is grab your trusty concealer.

Here’s our guide of how to do a cut crease in just five easy steps.

What is a cut crease eyeshadow?

It’s pretty much contouring for your eyes, so if you've already mastered this for your face, you know the inspiration behind it. Playing on shadow and light, as its name suggests, this makeup technique cuts into the crease of your eyelid to create a dramatic line and contrast. With the power to add depth and define your lids, separating them from the brow bone, it’s a popular look for those with hooded eyes but looks great on everyone. It can open up your eyes to create a doe-eyed look and help them appear wider.

Step 1: Prime and define

For a smooth, long-lasting finish and colour that doesn’t fade, start your makeup application with a thin layer of primer. Gently pat it on to your eyelids before letting it set and starting with your eyeshadow.

To define your crease, choose a neutral eyeshadow that closely matches your skin tone and sweep it across your lids. Follow with a darker brown shade and apply just above the crease of your eye beneath your brow bone.

We recommend using the Lancôme Hypnôse Eyeshadow Palette. Each palette contains five complementary shades in soft and velvety textures that can be blended with ease. You can also wet them for a more intense effect.

Step 2: Clean up your edges

To cut your crease, swap your eyeshadow palette for a light concealer offering medium to full coverage and apply to the inner half of your lid to clean up and define the edges of your brown eyeshadow. Use an angled brush to sweep the concealer outward.

Our multi-tasking Teint Idole Ultra Wear All Over Concealer is infused with skin-caring ingredients for smooth and comfortable wear, and comes with an angled brush for a precise application. It also provides full but breathable coverage and is suitable for sensitive skin, which can help when applying to the delicate eye area.

Step 3: Add some colour

Once you’ve defined your crease with your concealer, apply a layer of eyeshadow over the top to emphasise the contrast. For a more dramatic effect, you can amp up the drama with a shimmer or glitter finish.

Step 4: The finishing line

To add the perfect finishing touch to your crease eye, reach for your favourite eyeliner and apply along your lash line, moving upwards to create a winged or cat eye look. The definition at the lash line will also help to open up the eyes and make round or hooded eyes appear wider.

For a smudge-resistant finish, we recommend using the liquid Lancôme Idôle Liner. Its glossy carbon-black waterproof formula is easy to apply, doesn’t transfer and lasts up to 24 hours. It also has an ultra-thin tip of 0.1mm to deliver a super-fine line and precise application.

Step 5: Don’t forget mascara

Fuller-looking lashes can not only help to show off your handiwork by drawing attention to your eyes but also help your eyes to appear brighter and bigger.

The Lash Idôle volumising mascara helps to target every single lash with its 125 different bristle sizes and 360 micro-bristles for a fanned-out, lifted look. Its gel emulsion formula also provides a feather-light feel and clump-free finish that lasts up to 24 hours with wear.

Before applying, curl your lashes, holding the curler at the base of your eyelashes before gradually working upwards. Then follow the zig-zag method, moving your wand from side to side, to coat all angles including the tips and sides of your lashes.
